Tottenham Hotspur appear to be edging closer to a deal to sign Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid.

Respected Spanish news outlet AS claim that Mauricio Pochettino has already held discussions with the midfielder and has assured him that he would play a pivotal role in his side as part of the next phase of their project to compete for trophies next season.

Ceballos recently stated his desire to ‘play 40 games a season’ (Marca), something which he would find difficult to achieve at the Spanish giants.

The 22-year-old impressed during the Spanish Under-21’s successful European Championship campaign with Spurs looking ‘more and more likely’ as his destination for the upcoming season.

It is unknown as of yet whether Madrid would allow the highly-rated attacking midfielder to leave the club on a permanent deal or whether it would be a loan arrangement with the option to buy.

The talented midfielder has started just 28 matches across two full seasons in the Spanish capital and has been largely a fringe figure under the returning manager Zinedine Zidane.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. I don’t think hes ready for 40 games a season at Spurs, hes shown nothing like the level we need and if Poch wanted him over Lo Celso and or Van De Beek it would surely be to build a relationship with Madrid. I think Ceballos could be an awesome squad addition on top of Lo Celso and another advanced playmaker (Be that VDB, RDP or even possibly Eriksen staying?), but I definitely wouldn’t take him as an alternative to Lo Celso or the other advanced playmaker as think we’d be asking for trouble.

I also wouldn’t like to see him get 40 starts a season when hes way behind other options that aren’t going to push for return to Madrid at the first opportunity. The best we can hope for with Ceballos is that he only looks at us as a temporary step down and stay motivated, and even then he could destabilise our squad raving about Madrid. Real and Barca youth always seem to want to get back there.
