Report: Spurs academy graduate seals return to England after leaving N17 last year

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that winger Romaine Mundle, who left Tottenham last summer to join Standard Liege, has now completed a switch to Sunderland.

Mundle, who had come through the ranks of the Tottenham academy, had been one of the standout players for the club’s Under-21s last season, finishing the campaign with eight goals and six assists across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The pacy wide-man, who can operate in either flank, decided to leave Hotspur Way when his contract ran out last June and signed for Liege.

The 20-year-old has shown some glimpses of his quality for the Belgian side this season, having made six senior appearances for the club this season.

It was Romano who first reported earlier this month that the youngster had emerged as a target for Swansea City, Stoke City and Plymouth Argyle.

However, the journalist has now revealed that it is Sunderland who have won the race for the winger, having struck an agreement with Liege over his transfer.

Just seven months on from leaving Hotspur Way, Mundle now appears to be on his way back to England, with the winger expected to move to the Stadium of Light and aid the Black Cats in their quest for a playoff spot.

Mundle’s plan in leaving Spurs would have always been to get some first-team appearances at Liege so that he could be noticed by some English sides, which he seems to have achieved. The 20-year-old will feel his decision to depart Tottenham has been vindicated.
