Report: Spurs academy player called up to senior national side

Reports have revealed that Tottenham academy goalkeeper, Joshua Oluwayemi has been called up to the Nigeria senior international side for the upcoming friendly against Mexico.

This is the first time that Oluwayemi has been called up to the senior team and Nigeria turned to him after Ikechukwu Ezenwa was forced to withdraw from the squad due to injury.

The Spurs man previously represented England at U15 and U16 level, although the Mexico game will not affect his allegiance because it is a friendly, meaning he still qualifies for both nations for the time being.

The 20-year-old played an impressive 45 games across all competitions and age levels for Tottenham last season, earning 14 clean sheets and conceding 55 goals (TransferMarkt).

However, although he is set to be in a senior international squad, he may have to wait for chances at Spurs with Hugo Lloris, Joe Hart, Alfie Whiteman and Brandon Austin all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Spurs Web Opinion:

Spurs should let Oluwayemi ride this wave of progress and send him out on loan somewhere in the football pyramid next season. Goalkeepers, perhaps more than any other players, need to experienced competitive first-team action in order to improve.
