Report: Spurs admire young centre-back but are not yet convinced by him

Sky Sports have reported that Tottenham Hotspur are keen admirers of young centre-back Sven Botman but the club are not convinced he is at their level after just completing his first season of top-flight football (28/07/21 at 10:22 in the blog).

The 21-year-old defender played 27 games for Lille in Ligue 1 last season. The French side had an incredible season, winning Ligue 1 by pipping PSG to the title.

Botman was a stand-out performer throughout the campaign but the defender has reportedly yet to be sounded out by any Premier League side this transfer window.

Spurs are in the market for a defender, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that the North Londoners are working to sign Atalanta centre-back Christian Romero but still have no agreement because the Italian side are demanding €55 million.

However, Tottenham have a ‘Plan B’ that involves signing three defenders in the form of Takehiro Tomiyasu, Nikola Milenkovic, and Kurt Zouma.

Sky Sports also reported that Botman will be the first choice centre-back for Atalanta to replace Romero if he does indeed leave and sign for Spurs.

It has been a surprise to everyone that Botman hasn’t been circled around more, given the big need for centre-backs in the league.

Given Lille’s financial issues, it feels only a matter of time before Premier League’s start circling around his signature. This would be an excellent piece of business, proven or not.
