Report: Spurs agree deal for former club record signing; player now weighing up move

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal with Spartak Moscow for defender Davinson Sanchez which is worth €15 million (£13 million), according to The Times.

The 27-year-old is now said to be mulling over whether to make the move to the Russian side having fallen down in the pecking order in North London over recent seasons.

Sanchez, who joined Tottenham in an at-the-time club-record £42m transfer from Ajax in 2017 (Guardian) has struggled with consistency during his time in the Premier League and with just a year left to run on his contract, Spurs are now looking to cash in and recoup some of the fee.

There is also interest in the central defender from Real Betis, Sevilla and Galatasaray, however, it is Spartak who have offered the most money to Tottenham.

He would arguably become the highest-profile transfer between an English and Russian club since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, with Russian clubs still banned from European competition as a result of the invasion.

The Colombian international was the focus of some unsavoury treatment from sections of the home fanbase when he was jeered off the pitch against Bournemouth back in April.

Sanchez had only come onto the pitch in the 35th minute after an injury to Clement Lenglet forced Spurs into a change and had a hand in two of the Cherries’ goals before being substituted after just 23 minutes on the pitch.

Fabrizio Romano claimed last month that the South American wants out of North London this summer.

He wrote on Twitter: “Davinson Sanchez has decided to leave Tottenham this summer. Discussions will take place to find new club as he wants a new experience.”

Sanchez has made over 200 appearances for Tottenham since his switch from the Dutch giants and it now remains to be seen whether he will accept the move to Russia (transfermarkt).

It is time for Sanchez to move on and get his career back on track after a tough few years at Tottenham, while the club also have to move in another direction under Ange Postecoglou and bring in ball-playing defenders who can contribute to his style of play.
