Report: Spurs among clubs who tried to sign Roma defender this summer

According to a report in Roma Giallorossa, Tottenham Hotspur enquired about the availability of AS Roma centre-back Roger Ibanez during the summer transfer window.

Ibanez established himself as a mainstay in Jose Mourinho’s backline last season after completing a permanent move to the Stadio Olimpico last summer, and the centre-back has played every single minute of the club’s Serie A campaign so far in 2022/23 (Transfermarkt).

CalcioMercato reported back in June that Roma would be open to cashing in on the centre-back while Il Messaggero claimed at the time that Tottenham were prepared to offer €30m (£25.6m) for the 23-year-old.

Roma Giallorossa have now revealed that Spurs and Newcastle Unite both expressed an interest in Ibanez during the summer transfer window.

However, it is explained that Mourinho was keen to keep the Brazilian at the club and that despite conducting ‘more than one poll’, both Premier League clubs were driven away by the €80m (£69.8m) release clause in the defender’s contract.

Spurs Web Opinion

Roma were never really going to sell Ibanez on the back of his displays last season as his value is only going to increase over the coming years.

I am not surprised that Spurs enquired about the Brazilian’s availability as he would have been able to cover for the central sweeper role as well as right centre-back in Conte’s back three.
