Report: Spurs and Arsenal battling it out for Portuguese international

Spanish publication AS have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are set to battle it out for the signing of Lille midfielder Renato Sanches ahead of the January transfer window.

Sanches has not quite managed to quite live up to the expectations many had of him after he broke into the Benfica side as a teenager.

The midfielder, who previously spent a brief spell on loan at Swansea in 2017, has rebuilt his reputation since swapping Bayern Munich for Lille three and a half years ago.

Le10Sport reported during the summer transfer window that Spurs held a strong interest in the 24-year-old but he remained put at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.

The Portugal international’s contract with the reigning Ligue 1 champions runs out in a year and half, and club president Olivier Letang admitted in October that the player could be sold in January if a suitable offer is on the table.

AS have now revealed Tottenham and Arsenal are the ‘two most interested’ clubs in Sanches and the North London rivals are set to battle it out for his signature in January.

The report adds that Barca’s attempt to snap up the Lille star fell through in the summer due to his injury and that the Catalan club could reignite their interest in the player when the transfer window reopens.

It is said that Xavi’s men could look to hammer out a loan deal for Sanches until the end of the season with a mandatory purchase option.

Sanches’ stock has fallen considerably over recent years but he is clearly a talented player and he could potentially thrive if given a fresh start elsewhere. The 25-year-old seems like a good fit for Conte’s midfield, given his engine, versatility and technical quality.
