Report: Spurs and Arsenal both keen to land England international

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are set to battle it out for John Stones’ signature this summer with both clubs said to be keen on signing the Manchester City defender, according to a report in The Express.

TEAMtalk reported at the start of March that Spurs and Arsenal were interested in Stones, along with his former club Everton.

The 25-year-old has struggled to break into Pep Guardiola’s side this campaign despite their injury problems at the heart of their defence (transfermarkt).

The Daily Star reported last week that the England international had been told by Pep Guardiola that his days at the Etihad Stadium were numbered with the reigning Premier League champions looking to bring in Juventus stopper Leonardo Bonucci to replace him.

The Express reveal that both Jose Mourinho and Mikel Arteta are both keen on Stones as they go about bolstering their backline.

The report claims that the Spurs boss is a long-term admirer of the former Everton man and tried to sign him when he was in charge of Chelsea.

Both North London clubs are said to be monitoring the defender’s situation very closely and it is suggested that a transfer battle is likely.

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe Arsenal is likely to be Stones’ next destination given his relationship with Mikel Arteta. I don’t think we are likely to be in for him as the Manchester City defender just doesn’t strike me as a typical Mourinho singing. I believe Jose will want to bring in an experienced, no-nonsense centre half in the summer, who can dominate aerially.
