Report: Spurs and Arsenal could be set for ‘heated’ battle for 22-year-old

CalcioMercato have revealed that Tottenham and Arsenal could be set to battle it out for Lille striker Jonathan David in January.

David has been prolific at Lille for the past 18 months and Todofichajes reported last week that Tottenham have been watching the striker at the World Cup and mulling over whether to make a move for him in January.

Speaking to The Sun a few days ago, the Canadian international admitted his desire to play in the Premier League.

CalcioMercato have now claimed that David is one of four names on Arsenal’s shortlist for a centre-forward in January, with Mikel Arteta’s men said to be prioritising signing a number nine after the injury to Gabriel Jesus.

The report adds that the Gunners could be set for a ‘heated’ battle with Spurs, who are also said to be ‘very interested’ in the 22-year-old.

Apart from David, CalcioMercato add that Ajax’s Cody Gapko, Roma’s Tammy Abraham and Juventus’ Dusan Vlahvoic are the other options on Arsenal’s radar.

Interestingly, Gapko (GiveMeSport) and Vlahovic (CMW.it) have both been also been mooted as potential targets for Spurs over recent months.

Spurs Web Opinion

The only person I can see Spurs pursuing from the aforementioned four-man Arsenal shortlist is Gapko. I do not think Conte will be keen on signing another out-and-out centre-forward in January, given that he has both Harry Kane and Richarlison at his disposal. Even Gapko would likely not be a good fit for what Conte is looking for as the Dutchman prefers playing on the left or through the middle rather than on the right.
