Report: Spurs and Arsenal fighting ‘tooth and nail’ for winger due to financial situations

According to a report by The Sun, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are locked in an intense battle to land Willian this summer when his contract with Chelsea comes to an end.

There has been plenty of speculation over the winger’s future over the past couple of months with both North London sides being linked with a move for the 31-year-old (Mundo Deportivo and ESPN Brazil journalist Jorge Nicola).

The Sun claim that Spurs and Arsenal’s desperation to land the Chelsea man is driven by the fact that neither club has significant funds to spend this summer.

Both are said to be prioritising moves for free agents and with Willian being one of the most high-profile stars available on a free transfer, neither club wants to miss out on the opportunity to sign him.

The report suggests that the Brazilian international will not be renewing his contract with Chelsea and that his relationship with Jose Mourinho could give Tottenham the edge in the race for his signature.

It is also suggested that the Gunners and Spurs are contemplating selling some of their respective squad players to raise some transfer funds this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Mourinho is a big admirer of Willian and so it was always clear that we would be in for him if he became available. The Brazilian’s hints about his future so far also seem to indicate that he wants to stay in London. So, it looks like it will be one of either us or Arsenal who land him.

Ryan Fraser, who could also be available on a free transfer, will likely be the backup option for both North London clubs should they fail in their pursuit for Willian.
