Report: Spurs and Arsenal set to go head to head for talented French defender

According to Bleacher Report (The Boot Room), Tottenham Hotspur have now registered an interest in Arsenal target Dayot Upamecano and are ready to make a move (via Football London).

The RB Leipzig centre-back has put in some impressive displays over the last couple of years in the Bundesliga and has won several admirers.

Arsenal made a bid of €60million for the 21-year-old in the summer but saw their offer rejected by Leipzig (Bild). It is claimed that the Gunners might return for him in January as Unai Emery seeks to address his defensive problems.

This time, however, Arsenal will reportedly be facing heavy competition for Upamecano from their North London rivals, Spurs, who are also keen on bolstering their defensive options with both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld into the final year of their contracts.

According to L’Equipe (as relayed by Football.London), Upamecano’s release clause which currently stands at €80million will be reduced to €60million from 2020.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is clear that the defence needs a major overhaul as neither Jan Vertoghen nor Toby Alderweireld have looked assured so far this campaign. While I would stick with a combination of Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier, for now, singing Upamecano in January will be a masterstroke and ensure that he’s ready to start regularly from the start of next season.
