Report: Spurs and Atletico Madrid set to compete for midfield prodigy

According to recent reports, Tottenham Hotspur are set to back Mauricio Pochettino in the summer transfer window with the Argentine looking to improve his first team squad ahead of the club’s first full season at the new 62,062 capacity seater stadium.

The 46-year-old is set to have a budget of around £150 million to spend on new arrivals apart from the money obtained through player sales.

One area where the Lilywhites are looking to improve is in central midfield where they have been left short of numbers after Mousa Dembele’s departure to China in January.

Among the players that Spurs are said to be tracking is Fenerbahce youngster Eljif Elmas. The 19-year-old has made 34 appearances for the Turkish giants this seasons, and his performances have caught the attention of several major European clubs.

According to a report in Fotomac (Sport Witness), Spurs are said to go toe to toe with Atletico Madrid for the Macedonian’s signature in the summer.

The report further claims that Italian giants Fiorentina have already made a bid of €10m for Elmas but that Fenerbahce are holding out for a fee of around €20m.
