Report: Spurs and Liverpool ready to pay star’s £26m release clause

Calcio Mercato have reported that both Tottenham and Liverpool are ready to pay Lorenzo Pellegrini’s release clause to sign him from Roma this summer.

The report claims that Pellegrini and Roma were in negotiations over a new contract for the midfielder but they are struggling to come to an agreement.

As such, it is said that the Premier League duo are interested in snapping up the Italian star. Pellegrini has just 12 months left on his current Roma contract.

Pellegrini scored 11 and assisted another nine across 47 games in all competitions last season and TransferMarkt claim he is worth £36m in the current market.

Of course, Spurs would like to think that they have an edge in the race as they are reportedly set to announce Roma’s former manager, Paulo Fonseca as their new head coach in North London.

Fonseca managed Pellegrini last season, although it is unknown what kind of relationship the two had and whether the midfielder would want to follow Fonseca to Spurs.

SpursWeb Opinion

Pellegrini is one of Italy’s brightest midfield talents and one which Jose Mourinho will most likely want to keep at the club. Liverpool’s interest adds another complexity given their financial strength and ability to offer the 24-year-old Champions League football.
