Report: Spurs and Man Utd interested in signing Belgian international on free transfer

According to German publication Der Westen, Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest in signing Axel Witsel, whose contract with Borussia Dortmund runs out this summer.

Witsel has been a key player for Dortmund since joining the club in 2018 but the central midfielder has had to be content with a bit-part role under Marco Rose this season.

Der Westen claim it has been known for a ‘few weeks’ that the Belgian international will not be renewing his contract at Westfalenstadion and will leave on a free transfer this summer.

The report explains that Witsel is yet to make a decision on his next club but the player does not want to return to Belgium just yet.

Galatasaray and Juventus are said to have shown interest but the 33-year-old is also thought to be attracting interest from the Premier League.

The report claims that Spurs and Manchester United are both eyeing a move for Witsel ahead of the summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Witsel can be a decent squad player for us, with Harry Winks potentially on his way out of the club this summer.

While the Belgian is on the wrong side of thirty, the fact that he is available for free means that there will be no risk involved in the transfer.

However, I do not think the Dortmund man would rank high on Conte’s wishlist of central midfielders.
