Report: Spurs and Newcastle both ready to offer £26m for Roma star

According to Il Messaggero, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle are both ready to make an opening offer to sign AS Roma centre-back Roger Ibanez.

Ibanez was a mainstay in Roma’s backline under Jose Mourinho during the 2021/22 campaign, with the defender playing a key role in the club’s Europa Conference League triumph.

However, CalcioMercato reported last week that the Giallorossi could let the centre-back leave this summer, with Spurs named as one of the clubs interested in the player.

Il Messaggero have now revealed that both Tottenham and Newcastle United are keen on snapping up the 23-year-old.

The report alleges that the Lilywhites and the Magpies are both prepared to offer €30m (£25.6m) for Ibanez.

It is explained that no official offer has been made by either club and that the centre-back’s release clause stands at €80m (£68.4m).

Il Messaggero add that while Ibanez does have Mourinho’s trust, Roma are prepared to move for either Feyenoord’s Marcos Senesi or Bologna’s Arthur Theate if the defender leaves this summer.

Apart from a left-sided centre-back, Spurs also need to sign another central defender this summer to cover for Dier and Romero, with both Sanchez and Rodon potentially on their way out. The club might have identified Ibanez as an option for that role as the likes of Gleison Bremer or Marc Guehi could prove too expensive for a backup role.
