Report: Spurs and Newcastle could look to beat West Ham to midfield star

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to hijack West Ham’s pursuit of Southampton star James Ward-Prowse this summer, with Newcastle United also thought to be keen.

Ward-Prowse has so far been a one-club-man, with over 400 appearances for Southampton and 53 goals and 51 assists to his name (Transfermarkt).

The Saints captain has had an impressive season on an individual level this year, with nine goals and three assists from midfield in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Despite that, Southampton find themselves rock bottom in the Premier League right now, six points from safety with just four games to play.

Ward-Prowse is thought to be one of the players that will be targeted for a move in the summer should Southampton relinquish their top-flight status and the club have even said they will let their captain leave if that does happen (talkSPORT).

Tottenham have long been linked with the 28-year-old (Football Insider) and it is believed they have been sending scouts to watch him play recently (Daily Mail).

Now, the latest from Football Insider names West Ham as an interested party in the future of the set-piece specialist, but the Hammers could face a challenge in securing his signature.

The report claims West Ham’s efforts to sign Ward-Prowse may end up being “scuppered” by either Tottenham or Newcastle.

Both clubs have “monitored the midfielder’s situation this term,” and may hold the upper hand in the race to sign Ward-Prowse.

Despite being “on the radar” at West Ham, it is thought it would be “difficult” to do a deal given the interest from teams higher up the table.

I can’t imagine Ward-Prowse opting for West Ham over the likes of Spurs and Newcastle, though the fact he would pretty much be a guaranteed starter for the Hammers might factor into the decision-making process.
