Report: Spurs and Premier League rivals asked to ramp up security measures

All Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, have been asked to ramp up their security measures after a spate of protesters tried to attach themselves to goalposts last week, The Daily Mail have revealed.

Several games across the top flight were hit by delays last weekend after protesters stormed the pitch.

Tottenham’s 3-1 win over West Ham was also impacted, with protesters taking advantage of the altercation between the two sides in the second half to make a run for the goalposts.

The Mail reveal that six arrests were made on Sunday following the incident at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It is explained that clubs are now reviewing and drawing up detailed plans to prepare for numerous potential scenarios.

The Premier League is said to have advised all 20 clubs to review their security in consultation with the police and their safety advisory groups, with there being ‘a significant chance’ of repeat attempts over the coming weeks.

Clubs are expected to increase stewarding and have pitch protection teams around the goals. They have also been advised to have the appropriate equipment available to detach protestors from fixed objects like the goal frames.

This measure to increase stewarding is certainly welcome. The Premier League, given the global product it is, cannot afford long delays like the one we saw at Goodison Park last week. It also has the effect of killing the momentum of the game, thus serving as a disadvantage for the side who are on the front foot.
