Report: Spurs and Serie A side could exchange defenders in two separate summer deals

Tottenham and Inter Milan could end up exchanging central defenders this summer in two separate deals, with Vertonghen moving on a potential free transfer and Godin tipped to be sold the other way.

Football Insider revealed last week that Spurs were preparing to start next season without Vertonghen after he rejected the club’s one-year contract offer.

The Belgian is said to want a two-year deal and an exit is suggested as likely, with Inter Milan said be leading the race for his signature (Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness).

Godin is expected to leave Inter Milan at the end of the season (Daily Mail), and Jose Mourinho is said to be keen on bringing him to North London (Mirror).

Calcio Mercato (as relayed by Football 365) now reports that Vertonghen is seeking a new challenge and could end up at the Nerazzurri next season.

They also claim that Inter could sell Godin to the Lilywhites as Antonio Conte’s side are keen to shift the defender off their wage bill.

Spurs Web Opinion

I expect Vertonghen to leave this summer as I don’t think he has done enough to convince Jose Mourinho and the club that he deserves a two-year contract. However, I don’t think Godin is the answer to our problems at the back as he will be a short-term fix and the jury is out on whether he can handle the pace and intensity of the Premier League at his age.
