Report: Spurs are ‘above all’ in race to sign forward after January offer rejected

CalcioMercato say that Tottenham Hotspur are currently leading the race to sign Albert Gudmundsson next summer after Genoa turned down an offer from Fiorentina for the attacker during the January transfer window.

Tottenham raided Genoa for one of their best players in January, paying £26.7m to bring Radu Dragusin through the door.

It was reported previously that the Romanian was not the only Genoa player the Premier League side had their eye on, with Genova Today claiming two months ago that the Lilywhites had also been monitoring Gudmundsson.

The Icelandic international, who can operate as a number ten as well as on either flank, has been on fire so far this season, with 11 goals and three assists to his name across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Tottenham leading the race for Albert Gudmundsson

CalcioMercato have now claimed that Spurs still retain an interest in Gudmundsson, even asserting that Ange Postecoglou’s men are ‘above all’ in the race for the player.

The report reveals that Genoa turned down an offer of €22m (£18.7m) plus bonuses from Fiorentina for the 26-year-old as it fell short of their asking price of €30m (£25.6m).

The outlet adds that the reason the Serie A club turned down the bid is because they are confident they will receive more offers for Gudmundsson next summer, particularly with Tottenham ‘incessantly following’ the player.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is too early to speculate on who Tottenham’s summer targets would be but Gudmundsson would certainly fit the bill for Postecoglou’s system, given his versatility. Spurs could perhaps look to take advantage of the relationship they have built with Genoa to land the 26-year-old.
