Report: Spurs are closely following Son’s South Korean midfield teammate

According to the print edition of AS (06/05/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur could battle Atletico Madrid for RCD Mallorca’s Lee Kang-in this summer.

Lee is enjoying an impressive campaign at Mallorca, with the versatile attacking midfielder scoring six times and providing five assists in 32 league matches so far (Transfermarkt).

Tottenham’s interest in the 22-year-old first came to light when Mundo Deportivo (29/04/23 via Sport Witness) revealed two weeks ago that the North London club were leading the race for his signature ahead of the summer transfer window.

The publication added that the South Korean’s contract at the La Liga club has a release clause of €30m (£26.3m).

AS have now become the latest outlet to report on Spurs’ interest in Lee, stating that the Lilywhites have ‘closely followed’ his progress.

However, they explain that Tottenham are not alone in their admiration for the player, with Atletico also said to be ‘keen’ on snapping him up.

The report states that Diego Simeone’s men did show interest in Lee during the January window but their efforts were knocked back by Mallorca, who are expected to be more receptive to offers for the midfielder this summer.

AS assert that both Tottenham and Atletico are aware that Mallorca would be ‘willing to negotiate’ a transfer in the summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham should have no issues outbidding Atletico for Lee if the club’s interest is genuine.

However, I suspect that the 22-year-old might be just one of a whole host of names on the North London club’s radar and the decision on the transfer targets would not be finalised until a new director of football or a head coach arrives through the door.
