Report: Spurs are now ‘accelerating’ move for 24-year-old midfielder

According to the print edition of A Bola (13/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur have now stepped up their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon midfielder, Pedro Goncalves.

Goncalves has been one of the standout players in the Portuguese top flight over the last couple of years and the attacking midfielder has seemingly taken his game up another notch this season, with 17 goals and 12 assists across all competitions so far in 2022-23 (Transfermarkt).

90 min reported that Tottenham had expressed an interest in the 24-year-old and were ‘watching him closely’ ahead of the summer transfer window.

This was followed up by a report from Record (13/04/23 via Sport Witness) on Thursday, which claimed that Spurs had first been alerted to Goncalves during their Champions League clashes with Sporting earlier this season.

The outlet added that the Lions will not let the midfielder leave unless his €80m (£70.6m) release clause is met as they owe his former club, Famalicao, 50 per cent of any transfer fee they receive for the player.

A Bola have now become the latest Portuguese publication to report on Tottenham’s interest in Goncalves, explaining that the North London club even discussed the attacking midfielder with Sporting during the negotiations for Pedro Porro in January.

The report asserts that the Lilywhites are now ready to ‘accelerate’ their pursuit of the Sporting star on the back of his impressive performance against Arsenal in the Europa League.

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that so many different outlets are reporting this suggests that Tottenham have likely reached out already regarding a summer deal for Goncalves.

However, Spurs are unlikely to meet the player’s £70m release clause and we know that Sporting can be quite a tricky club to negotiate with.
