Report: Spurs are now ‘seriously considering’ a move for midfielder before deadline day

Tottenham Hotspur are not giving up in their pursuit of Conor Gallagher, with a late approach planned for the Chelsea midfielder before the transfer window closes this month.

It has been well-documented that Tottenham’s next priority is to improve in the central midfield area, with a number 8 style player on Ange Postecoglou‘s wishlist (The Independent).

Conor Gallagher has long been among the top candidates to fulfil that role at Spurs, and it is thought the 23-year-old could be sold by Chelsea as they look to appease Financial Fair Play regulations. A valuation of £60m has been mooted (Ben Jacobs).

It has been said by sources at Football Insider that a summer move may be more likely for Gallagher, but the same publication recently suggested an offer of closer to £80m would be enough to make things happen this month.

There’s still time for Spurs to sign Conor Gallagher

Time is running out for Spurs to secure Gallagher’s signature before the winter window closes on February 1, but a report from The Times claims an approach could still be in the pipeline.

Apparently, the Lilywhites are now “seriously considering a renewed approach” for Gallagher and, despite it being “late” in the month, Chelsea are believed to be “willing” to part ways with their current captain.

The Blues will only sell, however, if it’s for the “right price” and it remains to be seen whether Spurs are willing to meet that valuation. The report cites £50m as the price tag Chelsea asked for in the summer, a fee Tottenham were not prepared to match.

With any sale of Gallagher counting as “pure profit” for Chelsea, his departure would go a long way towards easing FFP pressure on the club, and that £50m valuation may be deemed acceptable once more.

If £50m is what it takes, then I reckon we go for it. Any more, and we would be overpaying, but Gallagher would be a definite upgrade on Hojbjerg and Skipp, and the thought of taking Chelsea’s captain is very fun, too.
