Report: Spurs are ready to fight for signing of star with £70m release clause

The print edition of Record (13/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) has revealed that Tottenham target, Pedro Goncalves, has a release clause of €80m (£70.6m) in his contract with Sporting Lisbon.

Goncalves has had an outstanding campaign for the Lions, having scored 17 times and provided 12 assists across all competitions so far in 2022-23 (Transfermarkt).

The versatile attacker, who can operate as a number eight as well as on either flank, is thought to be on Tottenham’s radar, with 90 min reporting a couple of days ago that the Lilywhites are watching him ‘closely’ ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report added that Spurs are currently the frontrunners in the race for the 24-year-old ahead of the likes of Aston Villa, Liverpool and Newcastle United.

Record have now claimed that Goncalves first caught Tottenham’s eye in their Champions League clashes against Sporting earlier this season.

It is explained that the Premier League club have gathered information about the Portugal international and are now ready to fight for his signing.

However, the report adds that Sporting will not let Goncalves leave for anything below his €80m (£70.6m) release clause as the Lions owe 50 per cent of the transfer fee to his former club, Famalicao.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Spurs or any other club across Europe would consider activating Goncalves’ substantial release clause this summer.

It also remains to be seen if Tottenham would want to enter into negotiations with Sporting again on the back of the Portuguese club’s conduct during the Pedro Porro talks.
