Report: Spurs ‘are ready to make a firm move’ for PL midfielder in the summer

After being linked to Conor Gallagher for the last two transfer windows, Tottenham Hotspur are expected to make an approach for the Chelsea midfielder in the summer, especially if he hasn’t signed a new contract with the Blues.

Despite the intense rivalry between Tottenham and Chelsea, the Lilywhites have been tracking Conor Gallagher for over a year now.

Spurs boss, Ange Postecoglou, is known to be seeking a new number 8 midfielder to add to his squad, and Gallagher fits the profile the North London side are looking for (Independent).

Chelsea are wary of breaching Financial Fair Play regulations, and are open to letting Gallagher go (Ben Jacobs). It has previously been suggested that the Blues would be more susceptible to the transfer at the end of this season.

Spurs eyeing summer move for Conor Gallagher

Now, according to the latest from The Telegraph, Chelsea could face a “nightmare” situation as Gallagher heads into the final 12 months of his current contract, with his value decreasing all the time, and Spurs are ready to take advantage.

While Gallagher’s market value is dropping, “his salary profile is increasing,” meaning it would be more difficult for Chelsea to secure a new contract for the 24-year-old.

The Blues have previously knocked back Tottenham’s interest and have favoured approaches from the likes of Everton, West Ham, Fulham, and Brighton, but they will know they “cannot be so choosy” in the summer.

It is believed there has been “no significant progress over a new contract” for the midfielder, but there is still an expectation that Gallagher will push for an extension of some sort. Still, that agreement is “still far from certain.”

With this in mind, Spurs “are ready to make a firm move” for Gallagher at the end of the season. Telegraph asked a top sporting director to value Gallagher from a neutral perspective, and put a price tag of £30-35m on him for the summer.

This would be a “nightmare position” for Chelsea, as that fee “is a lot less than Chelsea will feel he is worth.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If we can get Gallagher for closer to £30m this summer, that’s a no brainer for me. He’s shown his quality this year, and would be a significant upgrade on the likes of Skipp and Hojbjerg for us.
