Report: Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea interested in 33-year-old forward

According to a report by Voetbal 24, Tottenham Hotspur could be set to compete with London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea for Napoli forward Dries Mertens this summer.

Mertens has been a fantastic servant for Napoli, having scored 134 goals in 352 appearances during his eight seasons at the club.

The Belgian international has featured quite regularly this campaign, having found the back of the net nine times and provided eight assists in all competitions so far.

However, Voetbal 24 claim the Partenopei are ready to move on Mertens when the transfer market opens as they seek to get the forward’s salary off their wage bill.

The 33-year-old, whose current contract runs out in 2022, is said to be happy at Naples and surprised by the Serie A club’s decision to cash in on him.

The report claims that Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal already have Mertens in their sights while Inter Milan are also tracking his situation.

Even though Mertens is still a quality player at 33 years of age, I do not believe the Belgian fits the requirements of what Spurs need. If we decide not to sign Vinicius permanently, I would expect us to go for someone like Sasa Kalajdzic who could serve as a good target man.
