Report: Spurs backed to reignite interest in Roma star amidst recent struggles

CalcioMercato have claimed that Roma winger Nicolo Zaniolo could decide to leave the Serie A club amidst Tottenham’s interest.

Zaniolo is said to have been a long-term target for Tottenham, with the club being linked with a move for the midfielder as far back as in 2019 (Mirror).

There were even reports in the summer of 2020 suggesting that the North Londoners saw an offer of £45million for the winger turned down by Roma.

However, the Italy international picked up an ACL injury last year which put him out of action for the majority of last season.

The 22-year-old has struggled to hit the same heights since returning from his injury, having found the back of the net just once in 15 appearances this season.

CalicoMercato now claim that Zaniolo could decide to leave the San Siro after being overlooked by Jose Mourinho over recent weeks. The report goes on to add that Tottenham ‘like’ the winger’s profile.

Another report from the same publication reveals the Giallorossi are not in a hurry to offer Zaniolo a new contract and are prepared to wait for any potential suitors.

The report again states that England is likely to be the winger’s destination, with Spurs following the player closely.

Spurs Web Opinion

Zaniolo was an outstanding talent that Spurs would have likely taken in a heartbeat until last year. However, we have seen with ACL injuries that sometimes players are never the same when they return to action. So, spending big money on the 22-year-old would now be viewed as a major risk.
