Report: Spurs battling two Premier League clubs for South American starlet

90 min have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur hold an interest in Sao Paulo starlet Pablo Maia, but they are not the only Premier League club in the race.

Maia has impressed with his versatility since making his senior debut for Sao Paulo last year, having featured in central defence, in defensive midfield, and as a box-to-box midfielder for the club.

The 20-year-old has shown maturity beyond his years and a call up the Selcao’s senior set-up cannot be too far away if he maintains his current level of performance.

90 min now claim Maia has caught the attention of several Premier League clubs ahead of the January transfer window.

It is revealed that Spurs have been monitoring his development in the Brasileiro Serie A closely while Fulham have allegedly already had a bid turned down for the player.

The report asserts that West Ham are also keen on signing Maia but the Hammers would prefer to sign the youngster on loan with an option to buy, while Sao Paulo prefer a permanent sale.

Spurs Web Opinion

Players rarely make moves straight from South American football to the Premier League. The Serie A, Ligue 1, the Bundesliga and Eredivisie are usually easier paths for Brazilians to transition to European football, which is why I am sceptical about whether Maia will join any of the aforementioned clubs.
