Report: Spurs centre-back target would be even more expensive than Bastoni

The Athletic have revealed that RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol is expected to be even more expensive than Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni this summer.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold reported over the weekend that Bastoni is Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici’s top target for the left centre-back role.

However, the journalist said that Inter Milan’s £51m asking price could put the North Londoners off from pursuing Bastoni, adding that Spurs also admire Gvardiol.

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick subsequently claimed that Bastoni is reluctant to swap the San Siro for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He suggested that while the deal for the Italian is not dead in the water, Spurs would have to convince the defender.

However, if The Athletic’s latest update is to be believed, a deal for Gvardiol is also unlikely to prove straightforward for Conte’s men.

The report claims that, because the Croat is just 20 years of age, he ‘would probably be’ even more expensive than Bastoni this summer.

The Athletic add that Torino’s Gleison Bremer is another Serie A defender on Tottenham’s radar.

Spurs Web Opinion

Based on the reports over the last few weeks, it seems like Bastoni is Tottenham’s top target for the left centre-back role while Gvardiol and Pau Torres are the backups.

I remain hopeful that Conte will be able to persuade Bastoni to reunite with him at Spurs. The fact that Inter need to sell players to balance their books also gives me some confidence that the 23-year-old is gettable.
