Report: Spurs change transfer plans and abandon chase for target

While Tottenham have already secured the signings of Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke this summer, reports indicate that more arrivals are expected through the door before the end of the transfer window (Mirror).

One player Spurs have been heavily linked with is Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo. Corriere dello Sport reported on the 14th of July that Spurs had offered Toby Alderweireld plus €25m for the midfielder’s services. Alderweireld’s has a €25 million release clause in his contract that expires by Friday (The Guardian).

Meanwhile, Gazzetta dello Sport explained a few days ago that Roma were looking at other options at centre half. Now, another Italian outlet, Calciomercato, have claimed that Zaniolo’s move to north London appears unlikely as Spurs have changed their plans.

The report suggests that the Lilywhites have now decided to prioritize Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso instead. It is claimed that Lo Celso’s arrival will close the door for Zaniolo.

Both Zaniolo and Lo Celso are different players with the former preferring to play out wide while the latter prefers playing centrally. So it is hard to believe that a move for Lo Celso would close the door on a deal for Zaniolo. However, given the fee being branded about for Le Celso, it could be that Tottenham might not have the funds to secure their other targets this summer if they sign the Argentine.
