According to a report in Spanish publication AS, Tottenham are close to sealing a deal for Dynamo Zagreb’s Dani Olmo.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder had a fantastic season with Zagreb before impressing for Spain in their successful Euro Under-21 championship this summer.

The attacking midfielder, who likes to get on the ball and make things happen, is expected to leave the Croatian club this summer.

The report claims that Olmo is yet to make a decision regarding his next destination but the lilywhites are said to be leading the race for the former Barcelona academy product.

Olmo, who can play down the middle as well as out wide, is said to be valued at around €30 million by Zagreb and it is claimed that the relationship between Tottenham and the Croatian club is positive following their purchase of Luka Modric in 2008.

It is also suggested that Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, and Roma all retain an interest in Olmo.

If there is truth to this report, then it is likely Olmo’s performances in the recently concluded Euro U-21 Championship that convinced the club to pursue him.

While the Spaniard clearly looks a talent, we believe that it will take at least one more season before he is ready for first team football at Tottenham.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. This is just AS rehashing the same old story. Alisdair gold has already said firmly that Spurs aren’t interested, Olmos people came out shortly after and confirmed there has been nothing. The Ceballos link worries me as we look to be pursuing that one, I get the feeling we might end up losing Eriksen and having Ceballos as the replacement, which is depressing, without even taking into account that he will miss a huge chunk of pre season. Ceballos is nowhere close to Eriksen at the same age and I doubt he will ever be 40% the player Eriksen is.

If we bring in Lo Celso for primarily a midfield role ten we would have:

Dier : a defensive mid who can slot into a back 3 when out of possession
Sissoko : a high energy box to box who mostly breaks up opposition plays
NDombele : a high energy creative box to box who can move the play forward and can control the game
Winks: a calming central midfielder who settles the play down in tough games
Lo Celso: an attacking creative box to box who can drive forward, create and score and also play attacking midfield roles.

That is a good tactical set of options for unpredictable starting line ups and unsettling substitutions who can change the game.
Lo Celso can create, as can Lamela (when actually fit) but we need that advanced Eriksen type who can pick ways through the congested final third. Ceballos is simply not that type of player, hes more of an overly cocky Winks type of player. We have seen so many times when teams mark Eriksen out of games and City are so dangerous with David Silva, KDB and Bernardo Silva. If we had 2 creators, plus Alli for the tee up we would be frightening as well. I just hope we don’t go cheap on the most important area of this team next season (creativity).
