The Athletic have reported that Tottenham Hotspur are now closing in on their first signing of the summer in Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu.
The report claims that Spurs and Bologna are currently finalising terms of the transfer, with the price expected to be around £15m plus add-ons.
Tottenham have apparently been frontrunners for the majority of the summer transfer window, despite some interest from Man United, and Tomiyasu prefers a move to North London.
If completed, the Japanese defender, who can play at centre-back or right-back, would become Fabio Paratici’s first signing as Tottenham’s new managing director of football.
The Bologna man also has experience in playing on the left of a back three, with Spurs currently lacking a left-sided centre-back beyond Ben Davies.
Tomiyasu has been selected for Japan’s Olympics football team and could therefore miss the start of the season at Spurs.
Spurs Web Opinion:
This is a no brainer of a transfer. A relatively low price for a player who can play three different roles across the defence. A great bit of transfer business for Spurs to start the window with, but they still need a big-name centre-back to transform the defence.
