Report: Spurs confident they have not wasted millions on teenager

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham are still confident that Jack Clarke will prove to be a success in North London despite the winger experiencing a difficult season.

Clarke was snapped by Spurs from Leeds United for around £10 million last summer (The Telegraph) after an impressive debut season in the Championship for Elland Road outfit.

He was subsequently loaned back to Marcelo Bielsa’s side but he hardly saw any game time in the first half of the campaign and was recalled by Spurs in January and subsequently loaned QPR for the remainder of the campaign.

His time at Rangers has not gone according to plan so far with the 19-year-old having made just four appearances for Mark Warburton’s side and still waiting to make his first league start (transfermarkt).

Some Spurs fans have already expressed their worries about whether the money spent on the teenager had been wasted in light of his difficulty to break into the first team of two clubs in a lower division.

However, Gold revealed that Spurs are not second-guessing their decision to buy the pacey winger just yet.

Gold said: “Spurs still believe the Clarke signing is an investment in the future, despite his struggles to get starts this season and hopefully time will prove them right.”

I was hoping that Clarke would have a few more games under his belt at QPR and make an impact ahead of returning to Hotspur Way in the summer. As things stand, I can’t see him being a part of Jose’s plans for next season. I expect Clarke to be loaned out again next campaign to continue his footballing education.
