Report: Spurs considered favourites ahead of Man Utd and West Ham to land defender

Calcio Atalanta have labelled Tottenham Hotspur as the overwhelming favourites to sign Takehiro Tomiyasu ahead of Atalanta, Manchester United and West Ham United.

It was first reported last week that Fabio Paratici was in talks with Bologna over a deal for Tomiyasu.

After Nuno Espirito Santo was confirmed as the Tottenham head coach on Wednesday, it was claimed that the North Londoners could accelerate a deal for the Japanese international.

Sky Sports revealed on Thursday that Spurs’ opening bid for the 22-year-old of £12.9m plus an extra £2.6m in add-ons was turned down by the Serie A outfit, who value the player at £17.2m (€20m).

Despite Tottenham seeing their opening offer turned down, it looks like the Lilywhites are still at the front of the queue for Tomiyasu’s signature if Calcio Atalanta are to be believed.

It is suggested that while Man Utd and West Ham are both interested in the centre-back, with the Hammers even making an enquiry it is Spurs who have moved ahead of Atalanta in the race for Tomiyasu.

The defender is said to be keen on making a move to Tottenham despite the North London club failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League or Europa League.

Given that centre-back and right-back are the two areas where we are most desperate for reinforcements, signing an up and coming defender, who is comfortable in both positions, would certainly be a solid start to the transfer window.
