Report: Spurs contacts with Serie A star ‘are increasing’ ahead of January

Tuttosport have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are now stepping up their pursuit of Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

McKennie has struggled for regular game time at the Allianz Stadium this season and multiple Italian publications have suggested over recent months that Juventus are ready to cash in on the USA international in January.

Calciomercato reported earlier this month that Massimiliano Allegri’s men are willing to sell the 24-year-old for a fee of around €25-30million (£21.5-£26million) amidst Spurs’ interest.

Tottenham’s interest in the midfielder has also been confirmed by CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs, who took to Twitter a few days ago to claim that the North London club are ‘seriously considering’ the Juve star and there is ‘real substance’ to the speculation.

TuttoSport have now reported that Premier League clubs are ‘paying attention’ to McKennie’s situation, with Spurs alleged to be at the front of the queue.

The report states that contacts between the Lilywhites and the former Schalke man’s entourage are ‘increasing through intermediaries’. Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are both said to be admirers of the midfielder.

A move for McKennie would make much more sense for Spurs than pursuing someone like James Maddison. The American’s work rate off the ball and his tactical discipline make him a good fit for Conte’s system and he could come in handy as a squad player if the Italian chooses to deploy a 3-5-2.
