Report: Spurs could be part of summer ‘bidding war’ for Championship star

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to enter the ‘battle’ to sign Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney, but it is thought the Championship side will be holding onto the England Under-21 international until the summer, unless a ‘sensational’ offer is made this month.

With the January transfer window open, Tottenham’s attention is firmly on adding established talent to the squad to maintain the challenge for a spot in the top four and beyond.

However, that doesn’t stop Ange Postecoglou from looking to the future, and we’ve already seen the Australian recruit young talent such as Alejo Veliz and Ashley Phillips in the summer.

Now, it seems the Lilywhites are keen on Middlesbrough starlet, Hayden Hackney. It was first reported close to a month ago that Spurs were among a number of Premier League teams looking at the midfielder (The Daily Mail).

The 21-year-old has excelled in Michael Carrick’s side, registering a goal and an assist in 21 appearances this season (Transfermarkt).

Hayden Hackney could join PL side in the summer

According to a report from The Standard, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and now Spurs, are all circling Hackney. But, it is thought any side wishing to sign the youngster will have to wait until the end of the season, with his current club hoping to push for promotion this term.

Middlesbrough have already come to terms with the fact that Hackney will “eventually leave” the club, but with the player himself in “no rush” to move on just yet, it is said a “sensational” offer would need to be made at this point.

However, come the end of the season, Middlesbrough are more open to the idea of parting ways with their prize asset, and are keen to start a “bidding war” for the talented youngster. The report adds that Spurs are “particular admirers” of Hackney.

Hayden Hackney is one of the brightest talents in the Championship, and we should definitely be looking at him. However, I would leave him for now and consider a bid in the summer. Hackney could be the perfect homegrown replacement for Oliver Skipp.
