Report: Spurs could face competition from Newcastle for 28-year-old

According to a report from CalcioMercato, Newcastle United could be set to enter the race for rumoured Tottenham target Sam Johnstone.

Johnstone excelled in the Premier League last term but could not help West Brom to avoid the drop.

The England international has continued to shine for the Baggies in the Championship this season but his contract at the Hawthorns runs out at the end of the campaign.

With Hugo Lloris also into the final year of his contract at Spurs, Tottenham have been linked with moves for several goalkeepers over the past few weeks including the likes of Ajax’s Andre Onana and Everton’s Jordan Pickford

The Daily Mail claimed two weeks ago that Johnstone is another player the North Londoners have identified as a potential successor for Lloris.

However, if CalcioMercato’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs could face competition from the Magpies for the West Brom number one.

The report claims that Eddie Howe’s men are on the lookout for a goalkeeper and have identified Johnstone as an alternative to Lazio’s Thomas Strakosha.

I still think that Lloris will probably sign an extension if Spurs offer him one. Perhaps, the only doubt on the Frenchman’s mind is whether he could get a longer-term contract if he returns to Ligue 1 as Tottenham are likely to offer him just a one-year extension.

Even if Lloris signs an extension, the club will likely be on the lookout for another goalkeeper in the summer as Pierluigi Gollini has not looked the part so far. Johnstone would be quite an appealing option for the club since he is proven in the Premier League and would be available for free next summer.
