Report: Spurs could postpone receiving sell-on fee for former winger

According to O Jogo (via Sport Witness), Tottenham could choose to postpone receiving a fee for the potential sale of Marcus Edwards to Sporting this month.

Edwards, 23, departed Spurs to join Vitoria Guimaraes in 2019 and has been flourishing in a two-and-a-half-year stint in Portugal.

He has recorded eight goals and three assists in all competitions so far this term, which has caught the attention of Primeira Liga giants Sporting.

Reports have suggested the Leoes have prepared an offer worth €6 million (£5m), but could increase their bid to around €8 million (£6.6m) to secure a deal.

But, whatever price Vitoria agree to sell Edwards at, Tottenham would be entitled to 50 per cent of the proceeds having inserted a sell-on clause into his contract upon his departure from North London.

However, O Jogo reports that Spurs are currently not in a rush to receive their share of a potential sale and could choose not to activate the clause at all if he is sold this month.

The report claims the Lilywhites may elect to keep the sell-on clause in Edwards’ contract in the hope he is sold for a greater fee in the future, which would net the club a bigger financial reward.

This is interesting, but it also makes sense in that Spurs feel Edwards will be sold for a bigger fee. He is still 23 and has plenty of time to continue blooming into a star player and a larger move could definitely be on the cards if he keeps developing.
