Report: Spurs could reignite interest in old target after ‘internal issue’ at current club

Tottenham could turn their attention back to signing West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone after he reportedly had a row with manager Valerien Ismael, according to the Mirror.

Johnstone was dropped from the Baggies’ squad, which suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Preston on Wednesday, with the decision not said to be related to injury or illness (BBC Sport).

West Brom boss Ismael later confirmed the England international’s absence was due to an ‘issue in the squad’ and he will also miss the club’s encounter against Millwall on Saturday (Birmingham Live).

But the Mirror claims the incident could reignite Tottenham’s interest in Johnstone, despite his intentions to stay in the Midlands beyond the January transfer window.

However, the report states the likes of West Ham and Southampton could also re-enter the frame, having been long-term suitors for the 28-year-old.

Sky Sports previously suggested that Spurs have been keeping tabs on Johnstone’s situation given his contract at The Hawthorns is due to expire at the end of the season.

Spurs have secured Lloris for another two seasons at least which is a major positive, but now they gave the issue of securing a solid backup.

Pierluigi Gollini has struggled to make a good impression when given the opportunity, and someone like Johnstone would be a solid number two. But the question is if he would want to take up such a role.
