Report: Spurs could look to sign former Chelsea defender amid club’s financial issues

TEAMtalk have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could potentially look to take advantage of Barcelona’s financial struggles to secure the services of centre-back Andreas Christensen next month.

Christensen spent a decade at Chelsea (including his two-year loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach), winning the FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League during his time at Stamford Bridge.

The Danish international joined Barcelona 18 months ago on a free transfer after his contract at Stamfor Bridge ran out, and while the centre-back has emerged as a key player for Xavi Hernandez, it has now emerged that he could be on his way out of Camp Nou in next month’s transfer window.

Relevo claim that Barca are working hard to find another investor to offset their losses and suggest that the club might be forced to cash in on some of their first-team players, with Christensen named as one of the names who could be on the chopping block.

Could Spurs move for Andreas Christensen?

TEAMtalk have relayed reports from Spain suggesting that Barca could be forced to sacrifice Christensen and they say that this has alerted both Newcastle United and Spurs.

The outlet states that both clubs are on the lookout for a top-quality centre-back, adding that we could see the Magpies and the Lilywhites launching bids for the former Chelsea man.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham will be alive to the market opportunities that open up but hardly any reliable journalists or outlets have suggested that Christensen is one of the names near the top of Ange Postecoglou’s wishlist. We have to wait and see how this story develops over the coming weeks.

Instead, I would expect Spurs to be more likely to push for a transfer for likes of Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice or Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo, who is entering the last few months of his deal.
