Report: Spurs could sign Inter Milan star on a free transfer next summer

CaclioMercatoWeb.it have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could look to snap up Stefan de Vrij on a free transfer when his contract with Inter Milan runs out next summer.

Earlier this summer, De Vrij was reported to be one of the centre-backs on Tottenham’s radar (Football Insider), as was his Inter teammate Alessandro Bastoni, who was even more heavily liked with a move to the North London club (Football.London).

It does not appear as if Spurs are going to sign either player this summer after they snapped up Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona.

CalicoMercatoWeb have now revealed that De Vrij is unlikely to leave the San Siro during the current transfer window despite his contract situation.

It is explained that while Inter are willing to offer the Dutchman a new deal, they want him to accept a contract worth €3m (£2.5m) per year, which is lower than the €4.2m (£3.5m) that he currently earns.

The report adds that if De Vrij does not agree on a new deal, Conte’s men could look to snap him on a free transfer just as they did Ivan Perisic this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs will perhaps have an eye on De Vrij’s situation and they could move for him if they need a backup to Eric Dier next summer. However, I think Bastoni will once again be Tottenham’s top centre-back target next summer.

In fact, I believe that the main reason the club decided to sign Clement Lenglet on loan instead of spending £40m-£50m on someone like Pau Torres, is because they intend to bid again for Bastoni next summer.
