Report: Spurs defender chooses club to join on loan, but wants to come back for first-team chance

Tottenham Hotspur right-wing-back, Djed Spence, is set to join Rennes on loan for the rest of the 2022/23 season (Football London).

Since his transfer from Middlesbrough in the summer, following an impressive promotion-winning spell with Nottingham Forest, Spence has found game time hard to come by under Antonio Conte.

Despite this, Spence’s loan to Rennes will remain just that, with no option or obligation to buy included in the deal this month. It is said that Tottenham believe he has a long-term future with the club, while Spence himself believes he can earn a spot in the first team when he returns.

Spence reportedly picked Rennes himself out of a group of five loan offers, although Football London do not name the other four teams. It appears the youngster preferred a move outside of England for the time being.

The loan move sees Conte left with Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty in the right-wing-back position for now, with just one day left in the January transfer window.

Spurs Web Opinion:

This feels like a strange loan as you would think Spence would want some Premier League experience under his belt, but at least he will get first-team football. I have my fingers crossed that him leaving is a good sign for the Pedro Porro deal.
