Report: Spurs defender could be used in exchange deal for new wing-back

Tottenham Hotspur have identified Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries as a target for the January transfer window, and may use Emerson Royal as a makeweight in any potential deal.

Despite signing young defender Djed Spence in the summer, Antonio Conte doesn’t seem to have found the right man to fulfil the role of right wing-back in his system at Spurs.

Emerson Royal has been the man called upon most by Conte this season, making 16 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt). The Brazilian has had his fair share of critics though, and his future is far from certain.

Meanwhile, Matt Doherty, who appeared to be in favour last season, has made just eight appearances this season with four of those being as a substitute (Transfermarkt). Djed Spence is yet to start a game and has played just three minutes across three appearances this campaign (Transfermarkt).

Spurs could well be looking to improve in that area come January then, and it has emerged that Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries may be on the list of players Conte wants to bring in.

According to Italian outlet CMW, Conte would be willing to let Emerson Royal go in the other direction to sweeten the deal, too.

The report suggests Tottenham could make a move for Dumfries, who only joined Inter Milan last summer. It is believed that the Dutch international would cost around £35 million.

That figure could be significantly reduced though if Spurs were to send Royal to Inter Milan, with the report claiming £20 million could be recouped through the Brazilian’s move in the opposite direction.

I really like Denzel Dumfries, and he’s already the full package when it comes to playing in the role Conte is looking for. We know Conte isn’t averse to raiding his old club, so maybe this could be another coup for Fabio Paratici to negotiate in January.
