Report: Spurs defensive target has most mistakes leading to goals in Bundesliga this season

With Jan Vertonghen currently set to leave Tottenham in the summer when his contract expires, the club are reportedly in the market for a centre half.

Among the players to be linked with a potential move to North London is Freiburg defender Robin Koch. The centre-back is having an impressive season and it appears his performances in the Bundesliga are not going unnoticed.

Record (via Sport Witness) reported back in January that Spurs were following the German international’s progress closely, while O Jogo reported earlier this week that Spurs are set to compete with Benfica, Napoli, and RB Leipzig for the defender’s signature this summer.

However, the 23-year-old’s individual stats indicate that he may not be the finished product that the Lilywhites arguably need at the moment.

Opta, in collaboration with beIN SPORTS, have revealed that the Freiburg star has made more individual mistakes leading to goals than any other defender in the Bundesliga this season.

In fact, Koch is also said to have lost 56 areal duels this season, the joint highest with Bayer Leverkusen’s Sven Bender.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am usually sceptical of analysing individual players stats out of context as it can be quite misleading. Freiburg have a good defensive record this season with just 30 goals conceded and Koch has played an important part in that. However, the last thing we need at the moment is another error-prone defender. I expect Mourinho to try and bring in an experienced operator who can be a calming influence for us at the back and if these stats are anything to go by, Koch doesn’t seem to fit that profile.
