Report: Spurs emerge as shock contender to sign 31-year-old Chelsea player

The Sun have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are considering a shock move to sign Edouard Mendy from Chelsea this summer.

The report states that Spurs plan on saying goodbye to club captain Hugo Lloris at the end of the season and have identified Edouard Mendy as a potential replacement for the Frenchman.

Despite the fact that Tottenham do not yet know who their next head coach will be, it is explained that they have had their eye on the Senegalese goalkeeper for a long time.

Mendy, who has fallen behind Kepa Arrizabalaga in the pecking order this season, is contracted to Chelsea until 2025 but the goalkeeper is thought to have rejected the club’s latest long-term contract offer.

Spurs are said to be aware of the 31-year-old’s contract standoff with the Blues and are now contemplating making an offer for him this summer.

The Sun add that Chelsea are planning a fire sale to trim the size of their squad and reduce their wage bill this summer, with Mendy one of many players to be transfer listed by the club.

This move would only make sense if Tottenham are looking at Mendy as a potential backup option rather than as the first choice.

The 31-year-old is quite error-prone and it is unlikely that the North London club hierarchy would be looking at him as an option to succeed Lloris as the number one.
