Report: Spurs end their interest in £43m-rated Brazilian midfielder

Tottenham have ended their interest in Flamengo midfielder, Gerson after the Brazillian side demanded a sum of around £43m for the 23-year-old (Esportes).

Flamengo manager, Jorge Jesus, is said to be well aware of the interest in his midfielder following their recent Copa Libertadores victory.

However, it is not just Spurs who have shown interest in the midfielder with London rivals, Chelsea also reportedly interested (The Sun).

The report suggests Spurs have already offered £16m for Gerson, but the Brazilian side are holding out for an extra £27m for their star player.

Gerson joined Flamengo last January in a deal worth around £11m from AS Roma (Transfermarkt).

The switch to Brazil from Roma made Gerson the most expensive Brazilian to ever be signed by a Brazilian side. As a result, it is expected that Flamengo will hold out to make a substantial profit on the youngster.

Tottenham’s interest in the midfielder is believed to have been sparked by Jose Mourinho who knows Jorge Jesus well.

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs are clearly interested in bringing in a midfielder to bolster their squad. However, it is highly unlikely that we will see a midfielder worth £40m+ arrive this summer – given the current financial issues in the world. I think Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg would be the most likely arrival.
