Report: Spurs enquired about £38m-rated forward in January – Move no longer a priority

Tottenham enquired about the availability of Ajax forward Antony during the January transfer window before signing Dejan Kulusevski, according to CalcioMercato.

Spurs were in pursuit of reinforcements in the winter after head coach Antonio Conte insisted the club needed to strengthen the options at his disposal (Football.London).

The Italian eventually oversaw a frantic deadline day, with Juventus pair Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur arriving while a number of outgoings ensued.

But Tottenham may not have secured the transfer of the former had they pushed through with a move for Ajax’s Antony instead.

CalcioMercato claims Spurs asked the Dutch outfit for information on the Brazilian, who has since been hit with a £38 million price tag, ahead of signing Kulusevski.

And the Sweden international’s strong impact since arriving at Spurs is likely to end the club’s interest in Antony, with the report claiming Conte’s side will not add another pricey player in attack.

Kulusevski joined Tottenham on an initial 18-month loan with an obligation to buy for just over £29 million if specific sporting objectives are met (Sky Sports).

He has notched two goals and five assists in 10 Premier League games (Transfermarkt), with his latest performance helping Spurs to a 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle.

Spurs Web Opinion

Antony is one of the most eclectic forwards in Europe and his addition would be massive for any side.

He would have been excellent for Spurs too, but Kulusevski has been impressive instead which will mean the club won’t need to make another expensive signing in a similar position.
