Report: Spurs expect long-serving star to sign contract extension

According to a report by Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur have offered Jan Vertonghen a contract extension until the end of the season and expect the centre-half to sign the deal.

Vertonghen appears to be on his is on his way out of Spurs in the summer after eight seasons at the club.

The 33-year-old, whose contract runs out at the end of this month, is reportedly attracting interest from clubs in Spain and Italy (Calcio Mercato).

Football Insider reports that the Belgian international has rejected the offers Spurs have made to extend his stay in North London by a further year.

However, they reveal that there is also a deal on the table to extend the defender’s stay until the end of the campaign.

Tottenham are said to be confident that Vertonghen will sign the contract and play a part in the final nine games of the season before departing North London ahead of the next campaign.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no reason to expect that Vertonghen will leave at the end of the month. He has proven his loyalty to us over the years and I am in no doubt that he will want to finish the season before leaving.

Being a free agent in the summer, I expect him to land a bumper contract elsewhere this summer. No one can argue against the fact that the Belgian deserves a big payday after the great service he has given us over the years.
