Report: Spurs expected Pochettino to take PL job last season – Were set to offer him Dele

Manchester Evening News have revealed that some at Tottenham Hotspur expected Mauricio Pochettino to join Manchester United as early as last season.

Pochettino is reportedly Manchester United’s number target to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the helm.

The Argentine, who was linked with a return to Spurs over the summer, is alleged to be open to swapping Paris Saint-Germain for United.

This has now been backed up by MEN, who suggest that Pochettino is unsettled in Paris and would be open to a move to Old Trafford mid-season.

MEN further explain that the former Tottenham boss has long-harboured ambitions to manage United. The 49-year-old was said to be the Red Devils’ first choice when the club initially sacked Jose Mourinho in 2018.

In addition, United are thought to have sounded out the Argentine coach at the beginning of last season after they lost 6-1 to Spurs.

The report goes on to explain that figures at Tottenham were so prepared for Pochettino to join United last season that the North London club had made provisional plans to offer them Dele Alli.

Spurs Web Opinion

Perhaps one of the reasons Pochettino is ready to quit PSG for United now is because of the fact that he has missed several opportunities to do so in the past and potentially fears that this is the last time they might come calling. I personally think it would be a mistake for the Argentine to head to Old Trafford without at least securing a league title at PSG.
