Report: Spurs expected to beat Chelsea and Man Utd to centre-back’s signature

The Daily Mail have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are now closing in on a deal to sign Blackburn Rovers starlet Ashley Phillips.

Phillips, 17, has broken into Blackburn’s senior side, having made two appearances for the club so far this season – one in the Championship and another in the Carabao Cup.

The Mail reveal that the centre-back caught the eye of Tottenham’s scouts with his performances for Rovers’ development side last season.

The 6ft 4ins defender is also said to be on the radars of both Manchester United and Chelsea but Spurs are thought to be looking to strike a deal ahead of their rivals.

The report claims that Fabio Paratici is expected to be at Rovers’ game at Reading tonight to take a closer look at Phillips.

It is explained that once the Spurs managing director of football gives the green light after watching the youngster in action, the North London club will push ahead with a move for the centre-back.

Overhauling the club’s academy recruitment is clearly one of Paratici’s main objectives at Spurs and probably contributed to the hiring of Gretar Steinsson and Andy Scoulding. So, we will likely see Tottenham continue to snap up several young starlets from the EFL over the next few transfer windows.
