Report: Spurs expected to sign 24-year-old defender after selling current star

The print edition of El Periodico Mediterraneo (11/07/22 – as relayed by Sport Witness) have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Villarreal left-back Pervis Estupinan after selling Sergio Reguilon.

Reguilon has not travelled with the Tottenham squad to South Korea, and reports indicate that the Spaniard is now edging closer to a loan move to Sevilla (Football Insider).

Meanwhile, Marca reported earlier this month that Villarreal were willing to cash in on Estupinan this summer and that Spurs were leading the race to sign the Ecuador international.

El Periodico Mediterraneo have now backed up Marca’s revelation regarding Tottenham’s interest in the 24-year-old, explaining that Conte has asked the North London club’s hierarchy to snap up the left-back.

The report states that Spurs want to move Reguilon on before pursuing Estupinan and that the Lilywhites would be willing to loan the former Real Madrid man to Sevilla with an obligation to buy.

It is asserted that Tottenham and Villarreal could also discuss Giovani Lo Celso in their negotiations for Estupinan, with Unai Emery’s men thought to be keen on snapping up the Argentine.

Estupinan does not offer enough going forward to play as a left-wing-back in Conte’s system. Besides, in Perisic and Sessegnon, we already have two good options for that role.

So, if Spurs are interested in the Villarreal star, Conte might be eyeing him as an option for the left centre-back role. However, I think even that is quite unlikely now that Lenglet has arrived through the door.
